Our Story

Our Mission: Turning Waste Into Worth

Remains LLC traces its roots back to the 1970s when founder Kelly Stewart developed a passion for vintage and used clothing. In 1981, Kelly opened a small retail store on Hampton Avenue in St. Louis, MO, dedicated to giving clothing a second life. Recognizing the opportunity for growth, he expanded the business in 1995 by acquiring a warehouse on Meramec Avenue, where the focus shifted toward large-scale textile recycling.

Equipped with balers, conveyors, forklifts, trucks, and trailers, the company transformed into a leader in textile recycling. Grants from the Department of Natural Resources and the St. Louis-Jefferson County Solid Waste Management District supported Remains’ growth and innovation. In 2005, with the help of the Brownfield Tax Credit program, the company moved operations to the former Acme Battery Site at 3340 Morganford, marking another milestone in its journey.

In 2022, Kelly Stewart retired, passing the torch to Whitehouse & Schapiro, a Baltimore-based company with five generations of expertise in the industry. Now operating as Remains LLC, the company continues its commitment to the community, offering trusted solutions for reuse and recycling of textiles. Whitehouse & Schapiro, known for their global networks through webuyrags.com, complements Remains LLC’s mission with their extensive experience and reach.

Today, Remains LLC honors its legacy while driving innovation in textile recycling, sustainability, and community support.
